Know your Body Mass Index

Your BMI (Body Mass Index) is a number calculated from your height and weight.  It provides a relatively reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to categorize weights that may lead to health problems.

It is defined as your body mass divided by the square of your height – with the value universally being given in units of kg/m2.

\mathrm{BMI} = \frac{\text{mass}(\text{kg})}{\left(\text{height}(\text{m})\right)^2}
= \frac{\text{mass}(\text{lb})}{\left(\text{height}(\text{in})\right)^2}\times 703
